May is Mental Health Awareness month. Poetic justice or just blessed to write this article after 17 years in the Arizona mental health system with our son, has taught us much.

Question: Can medical marijuana and hemp treat mental illness?

Answer: Yes, based on science. First, we need to look at what mental illness is and how the endocannabinoid system in your body regulates mental and physical balance called Homeostasis.

Mental illness is an imbalance in the brain from inflammation. Inflammation is commonly caused by toxic exposures or/and physical injury to the brain. It can be a psychiatric disorder or a medical condition that causes the behavioral disruptions and cognitive disfunction. Toxic exposures can be monitored with lab-based tests, psychiatric disorders are not lab based. When we treat the root cause as a toxic exposure under the protocol of charcoal and bentonite clay along with very specific supplements by Dr. Michael R. Gray, M.D. Environmental Medicine, over time we get well. Realizing Dr. Gray is not a Psychiatrist or Psychologist you should know many world-renowned mental and medical health doctors and providers are onto this science. Remove the toxin source, remove toxins from your body, treat the inflammation, to restore mental and physical balance.

This is where the human endocannabinoid system comes into the health picture, aka ECS. The Endocannabinoid System consists of billions of receptors all over our brain, gastrointestinal track, reproductive track, spleen, heart, other organs, and arteries. Some refer to the ECS as the “Master Regulatory System” mostly consisting of endocannabinoids, their receptors, and a variety of regulatory and metabolic enzymes. Its main job is to create homeostasis.

Tiffany Lester, M.D. fore worded a book titled, “CBD Oil Everyday Secrets”. Written by Gretchen Lidicker the book states the ECS affects overall health and wellbeing. Your receptors are everywhere is the reason this plant (Cannabis) seems to treat everything”. Regina Nelson, PhD., Nutritionist spoke at the Science of Cannabis Summit in Mesa Arizona in 2015 of cannabis (marijuana and hemp) as being a whole food: based on the live plant contains the complete chain of amino acids, every vitamin, mineral, cannabinoids, terpenoids, flavonoids, enzymes, and fiber, essentially everything essential to human health.

This is where cannabis plays a healthful role in treating human dis-ease, the base of this article, mental illness. Nothing reduces inflammation better than cannabis. When consumed it treats the root cause of dis-ease by attaching to the receptors in the ECS, restoring balance. When it comes to brain health, CBD (one of 140 known cannabinoids in every cannabis plant) antioxidant, neuroprotectant, and anti-inflammatory is paramount, it protects brain cells.

Studies by the US Dept. of Health and Human Services found cannabis as an antioxidant & neuro protectant, the Journal of Free Radical Biology and Medicine found the same, and the British Journal of Pharmacological describing CBD’s ability to stimulate neurogenesis defined as, “The growth of new brain cells”. Conclusion, CBD may be good to heal the brain, protect the brain from plaque evident in Alzheimer’s, treat short- and long-term symptoms, while healing the brain.

How awesome is that! According to Neurosurgeon Dr. Sanja Gupta, “As a society we have been systematically mentally manipulated into believing there is no therapeutic benefits to the cannabis plant”. Science is proving otherwise. Dr. Neil Tyson DeGrasse, Astrophysicist says, “Science always wins”.

Dosage is key. Full spectrum CBD from the hemp plant with no more than .03% THC or a CBD isolate with no THC, does not require a medical marijuana patient card. CBD from the marijuana plant always has higher CBD/THC ratios such as 4:1, 3:1, 2:1, or 1:1 and do require a registered medical marijuana patient card issued by Arizona Dept. of Health Services.

CBD has no psychoactive effects where THC 4:1 (that’s four parts CBD and one-part THC) can medicate the brain effectively for some disorders or be too much for others. Always start out with a CBD from hemp. If you need more help than it offers obtain your medical marijuana card. In our experience once you dial in your dosage treating symptoms with low dose or no prescriptions works great.
