A better question may be what could a consistent yoga practice offer me?
Gentle Yoga gives us the opportunity to create a strong mind-body connection through slow movements and diaphragmatic breathing. Learning to move and breathe with awareness helps to trigger the parasympathetic nervous response in the body, meaning we stay calmer and more relaxed. We begin to become more responsive, less reactive to situations in our lives, less stressed. Managing stress is a vital element in cognitive decline prevention strategy.
Physically, each yoga posture targets specific muscles in the body to help strengthen our muscles, especially as we age. We increase our degree of flexibility, not to create pretzel-like shapes with our aging bodies, but instead to reduce risk of injury. According to the Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation (through which I am certified as a Brain Longevity Specialist), practicing yoga and meditation acts as “brain aerobics”. You may find that a consistent yoga practice can improve your sleep, posture, lower your stress hormone- cortisol, and help relieve chronic pain.
